Programmes : Health & Hygiene
NLM contracted Educators are implementing programmes that teach children hygiene basics (i) Hand Washing (ii) Teeth Cleaning (iii) Body Hygiene. The NLM trained educators will provide a 40 minute talk and practical demonstration for each programme. i.e. during the hand washing programme children will put their hands in flour and then touch their friends, thus demonstrating to the children how germs are spread. Worksheets will be completed by the children in each presentation.
At the end of each presentation the students will be given an item relating to the presentation, together with a flyer to take home with pictures (parents are often illiterate) to reinforce the health message. After hand washing each child will receive a bar of soap, after teeth cleaning a toothbrush/toothpaste and after body hygiene a hygiene kit containing washcloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant (for grades 5 and 6) when items are available.
The items will have been provided by physical donations and specified donations from NLM supporters. Posters will be put up in all classrooms and school washrooms.
